Yoga is all about unity. The word itself literally means “to add”, “to join”, “to unite”, or “to attach” (according to Wikipedia). And yet, in our journey to our mats, many people, especially women feel a sense of isolation, or fear, which can keep us from deepening our practice and getting to the state of unity that yoga can deliver. We are afraid we don’t know enough, or have the right body, or the right clothes, in order to get started in our practice.
Everybody bends in their own unique way (because some bodies don’t bend very much) and every body is made to enjoy yoga, regardless of age, size, race, and level of ability or experience. There is no certain way we have to be, do, act, or dress in order to be “a yogi.” Anyone who comes to their mat and in order to bend is a yogi! And once we surrender ourselves to the asana, we all experience a plethora of physical and metaphysical benefits, which can be life-changing!
Now more than ever, there is such a rich diversity developing within the online community of yogis, especially women yogis! This Fall, Gaiam and the Yoga & Body Image Coalition have come together to share the stories of some of these women with you, and invite all women to get involved and bend with us!
- Oct 24: Cami Cote
- Oct 31: Dianne Bondy
- Nov 7: Brittany Danielle
- Nov 14: Valerie Sagun
- Nov 21: Melinda Parrish
- Nov 28: Anna Guest – Jelley
- Dec 5: Nicole Yarborough
In addition to sharing a different woman’s story with you each week, we’re also going to be featuring ALL women who are participating in the initiative by tagging their posts with #everybodybends and #whatayogilookslike. Tag @gaiam and @ybicoalition to also be entered for a chance to win a free swag bag with loot from the Gaiam collection and literature from the Yoga & Body Image Coalition, and to possibly have your content reposted.
Everybody bends, and deep down we all struggle with the same things when it comes to getting started with yoga. By sharing our stories with one another, we can inspire even more women to get started with their yoga practices, and empower one another to keep coming back to the mat. Regardless of who you are, how old you are, what size you are, what color your skin is, and how much experience you have, you are a yogi if you want to be! Join us this Fall–we can’t wait to see your moves!
